Ski season at French Broad River Academy is underway! For many of our students, this is their favorite season with FBRA Outdoor Programs. For one full school day per week in January in February, all FBRA students travel to Cataloochee Ski Area for skills-based, small-group instruction. Students love that they get to ski with friends from other classes, and we all appreciate the time up at the mountain all together as one school community.
Snowsports, Skills, Fun
During ski season, students are divided into small groups by ski level. Some groups start at the bunny slope while others refine advanced techniques up on the black diamonds. Our mornings are very skill-and-technique based, while the afternoons provide an opportunity to practice skills learned in the morning. Through our ski program, students learn to challenge themselves and grow in new ways while also appreciating a different aspect of the outdoors in Western North Carolina.
A majority of FBRA’s teachers are certified to instruct skiing through PSIA (The Professional Ski Instructors of America.) This and other training ensures that all students are learning proper ski techniques and mountain safety, according to the pros. The PSIA recognizes French Broad River Academy as one of the only non-resort ski schools in the US.
Friday Night Lights, Slopestyle
In addition to weekly in-school skiing, Friday Night Skiing is by far our most popular extracurricular throughout the year. These evening ski/snowboard sessions are supervised by staff but less structured, with the opportunity to free ski with friends from both the girls and boys programs. This year, we have a record 80 students participating in Friday Night Skiing.
See you out on the mountain, friends!
