This year’s Salamander Adventure Camp was a blast! Each year, French Broad River Academy offers a completely free summer program to students from Woodfin Elementary School. We designed this day program to get kids outside all day. They enjoy playing in our wonderful mountain playground and learning about our flora, fauna, and geology. Instructors Liddell Shannon and Mike Schneck, along with a teacher from Woodfin Elementary, led our campers to some classic spots in WNC, including Cove Creek, Dupont State Park, and Mount Mitchell. Each day was full of hiking, swimming, looking for salamanders and crustaceans, playing games, and just learning to be outdoors in appreciation of our beautiful mountain home. And of course, no trip to Pisgah Forest is complete without a stop at Dolly’s Ice Cream!

This completely free program launched four years ago, the result of a generous donation from the Lucas Family Foundation. A portion of the funding also comes from FBRA’s annual Lucas Memorial Float Trip, held in tandem with our Back To School Picnic each August. The donation specifies that the funds must be used for underserved populations. And as 98% of Woodfin Elementary students qualify for free or reduced lunch, they are a perfect partner for us.
