It’s been an amazing few days at French Broad River Academy. With normal school operations suspended due to the effects of Hurricane Helene, school staff has shifted focus to helping with relief efforts. The school’s South Campus is now the base of operations for a growing community grassroots effort to serve people in hard-hit and hard-to-reach areas. Since early this week, school staff members have helped mobilize support from the international whitewater community, coordinated dozens of volunteers and delivery of supplies, utilized the school’s entire fleet of vans to distribute goods directly to drop sites, and in some cases hiked into inaccessible places. Through the school’s Salamander Fund, more than $100,000 has been raised to support the Hurricane Helene Western North Carolina effort to provide resources and support to small communities in WNC.
